Sick of Losing Rentals to Higher Bids! Any Strategies?

I'm so frustrated with the rental process in Toronto! Every time I find a place I like, it seems I get outbid by someone offering way more. How do I know how high to go without seriously stretching my budget? Anyone have tips for navigating these sealed bids or competing offers?
