Landlord asking for employment letter - is this common?

I'm considering a rental in Leslieville that's listed for $2,300/month. The landlord wants an employment letter or my bank statements to confirm my income. Is this a normal request in Toronto? I'm a first-time renter, so I'm a bit unsure what's standard. Thanks for any insights!
