Confused About Some Lease Clauses - Are They Normal?

I came across a lease that requires tenants to provide a letter of recommendation from a previous landlord along with a credit check. Isn't that a bit much? Also, there's a clause that states I can't have more than two guests overnight. Is that even legal? It all seems pretty strange to me.
