Anyone else finding rent too high for good transit access?

I've been looking for apartments near the subway, but prices are through the roof! It feels like the closer I get to the subway, the more I have to sacrifice my budget. Is it worth paying a premium for that easy commute, or should I consider areas a bit farther out?
