Just lost another rental - is bidding over asking the new norm?

I'm feeling so discouraged right now. Just got outbid again—someone offered $300 over asking. How is this even sustainable? Am I the only one who thinks this is ridiculous? Is this the new normal in Toronto? I just want a decent place to live without constantly losing out!
