Confused About Rental References for My Apartment Search

Hi everyone, I'm looking for my first apartment in Toronto but never rented before and I'm unsure about who can be a reference. Do employers make good references? What do landlords typically ask for? I don’t have a past landlord reference, so I’m a bit worried. Any advice would be appreciated!
