Landlord asking for employment letter, is this normal?

I've applied for a new rental and the landlord is requesting an employment letter or bank statements. I’ve never been asked for this before in my previous rentals. Is this a common practice now? Has anyone been through this? Any advice on how to navigate this situation would be appreciated!
