Why are Toronto moving costs so expensive? Help!

I'm shocked by the moving costs in Toronto! How on earth do people manage these average moving prices? Plus, there are those outrageous elevator booking fees that seem to pop up everywhere. Is it really cheaper to DIY, or will I end up paying hidden moving expenses I didn't anticipate? Any tips?
