Need advice on renters insurance for my new apartment in Leslieville

I just signed a lease for a small one-bedroom in Leslieville, but my landlord is insisting on proof of renters insurance. Is this a common requirement in Toronto rentals? How much should I expect to pay for a decent policy? Any recommendations on companies or coverage levels? Thanks in advance!
