Separation from partner affecting my housing needs

I'm going through a tough separation and need to find a place of my own quickly. I'm also worried about my landlord's requirement for renters insurance; is it mandatory? What are typical costs? Has anyone else been in a similar situation and can share advice on finding a new place?
