Just lost out again - how is this normal?!

I just saw another unit get snatched up. Someone offered $300 over asking! How is this sustainable? I'm already stressed about the costs, and it feels like a bidding war every time I apply. Anyone else in the same boat? How do we compete with these crazy offers?
