Confused: Assignment vs Sublet—What's the Difference?

I’m so frustrated with my landlord and building issues, I just need to leave this Toronto rental ASAP! What’s the difference between assignment and subletting? Which option is better for getting out of my lease permanently? Do I need my landlord’s approval for either? Ugh, this is so confusing!
