Reality check - landlord wants 2 months deposit, is this legal?

I'm about to sign a lease for a one-bedroom apartment, and my landlord is asking for two months' rent as a deposit. I thought one month was the standard. Is this normal, or should I be worried that I'm being taken advantage of? Is this even legal?
