Curious about bike theft rates here?

I've been thinking about getting a bike for commuting, but I've heard mixed things about bike theft in some areas of Toronto. Is it common to have secure bike storage in buildings? Also, how do you all feel about riding home at night in this neighborhood? Is it safe?
