Is the subway worth it for my studio search?

I'm on the hunt for a studio in the city, but I'm torn. How far from a subway station is too far? I don’t want to feel like I’m living in the middle of nowhere just to save a few bucks. Anyone else deal with this dilemma? Would love to hear your experiences.
