Moving in Toronto isn’t just packing boxes — there are a lot of small things that can cost you money if you miss them. I put together a simple move-out / move-in checklist for Toronto renters so you don’t forget anything important.
📦 30–60 Days Before Moving
Give proper notice (Ontario rules vary depending on lease)
Start looking for movers early (prices go up closer to end of month)
Begin decluttering (less stuff = cheaper move)
Check if your new building requires move booking / elevator reservation
🧾 2–3 Weeks Before Moving
Update your address:
Bank, CRA, driver’s license, subscriptions
Set up utilities:
Hydro, internet, tenant insurance
Start packing non-essentials
Take photos of your current unit (protect your deposit)
📅 1 Week Before Moving
Confirm movers or rental truck
Pack essentials bag (clothes, chargers, documents)
Label boxes clearly (room-by-room)
Clean your current unit (important for deposit return)
🚚 Moving Day Checklist
Do a final walkthrough before leaving
Take photos of the empty unit
Check walls, appliances, floors
Keep valuables with you (don’t load everything into the truck)
🏠 First 48 Hours After Moving In
Inspect the new unit carefully:
Take photos of ANY damage
Test everything:
Water pressure, lights, appliances, outlets
Meet building management / concierge (if applicable)
Confirm mailbox + keys + fobs are working
⚠️ Things Most Toronto Renters Forget
Booking elevators (some condos will turn you away)
Parking permits for moving trucks
Internet installation delays (can take days)
Tenant insurance (some landlords require proof before move-in)
