Rental reference confusion for first-time renter

I'm applying for a studio apartment in Toronto, but I’ve never rented before and I’m unsure who can be a reference. Do landlords typically check previous landlords, or can I use my employer? What do they usually ask? Any tips for writing a reference letter would be helpful too!
