Just got outbid by $300 over asking! Is this even normal?

I can’t believe I just lost out on another rental. Someone offered $300 over asking! How are people even doing this? It feels like I'm in a bidding war for every place I consider. Is there a trick to standing out when everyone else is willing to pay so much more? I’m losing hope!
