Confused about lease renewal in Leslieville - is this normal?

I'm in Leslieville and my landlord just sent me a lease renewal with a 15% increase! I've only been here a year and the place hasn't changed at all. Is this even legal? How can I negotiate this? Anyone else facing similar hikes in rent right now?
