Lost another rental bid - how do people even compete?

Just got outbid again! I saw a place listed for $2,500, and the next thing I know, someone offered $2,700 and got it. Seriously, how are people affording to pay over asking like this? It feels like I'm stuck in a game with rules that no one shared. Any tips to stand out?
