Just lost another rental to a bidding war - what's going on?

Anyone else constantly losing out in these bidding wars? I just got outbid again, and it's beyond frustrating. Someone offered $300 over asking! How are people even affording this? It's like I'm playing a game without knowing the rules. Any tips on how to stand out?
