Is 24-hour notice for entry really a must?

I've been feeling a bit uneasy about my landlord's requests. I've read that they need to give 24 hours notice before entering, but sometimes they just show up unannounced. Is this a violation of my rights? I value my privacy and want to know how to protect my personal space during my tenancy.
