Average 1BR rent hit $2400 - where can we afford to live?

The average rent for a 1BR in Toronto has skyrocketed to $2400 this year. Many of my friends are now spending over 60% of their income on rent, leaving them unable to afford basics. How are new renters expected to stay afloat in such an unforgiving market?
