Lost another place - rental bidding wars are out of control

Just lost out on a unit again; someone offered $300 over asking! How are these people even affording it? It feels like I'm in a crazy bidding war where the rules keep changing. Anyone else feeling this stress? How do we even compete with such insane offers?
