Landlord requesting employment letter and bank statements - is this normal?

I'm applying for a new rental and my potential landlord is asking for an employment letter and recent bank statements. I've never had to provide these documents before. Is this a common request in rental applications, or should I be concerned? Looking for advice on how to handle this.
