Landlord asking for employment letter/bank statements - is this normal?

I'm currently renting and my landlord is asking for a recent employment letter or bank statements for lease renewal. This feels unusual to me, especially since I've been a good tenant. Has anyone been through this? What should I do if I feel uncomfortable providing this information?
