Fed up with rental bidding wars in Toronto!

I'm so frustrated with this crazy bidding war situation! Every time I find a decent apartment, someone outbids me by hundreds. How do you even know how much to offer? I'm completely lost and tired of losing out—what's a good strategy for this madness?
