Do I really need renters insurance in Toronto?

I'm moving to a new apartment in Kensington Market next month and my landlord is insisting that I get renters insurance. Is this something that's actually mandatory in Toronto? Also, any idea how much it typically costs? Trying to budget for everything and I’m a little clueless about this.
