Lost out again in the rental bidding wars! What’s going on?

Just got outbid for a place again! Someone offered over asking and it's frustrating to see so many people competing for the same units. How are we supposed to compete with offers of a year upfront? Is this the new normal in Toronto? Feeling so stressed and desperate for some advice.
