Why are post-dated cheques still a thing in Toronto?

Seriously, does my landlord really expect me to provide post-dated cheques? Is that the norm now? Can’t I just e-transfer or use a more modern payment method? This feels so outdated—hasn't the market advanced beyond old school cheques? What’s the deal with this insistence on checks?
