Question about my subletting rights – so confused!

I've been trying to understand my rights regarding subletting in Toronto. My landlord just denied my request, but I thought tenants could sublet with permission. Are there specific laws about this? Also, how do Airbnb restrictions fit into all of this? Feel lost!
