Confused About Subletting Rights in Toronto?

I'm a bit puzzled about subletting my apartment. My landlord just denied my request, but I read somewhere that tenants have rights. Can someone explain the legal subletting process and how landlords can restrict it? Also, what about Airbnb? I'm really not sure what I can do here.
