Upstairs neighbor's late-night noise is unbearable - need solutions!

My upstairs neighbor makes so much noise at night, it sounds like they're rearranging furniture or bowling! With kids needing their sleep, it's really becoming a problem. Anyone else dealing with this? How do you approach a neighbor about excessive noise without escalating things?
