Landlord requiring employment letter and bank statements - normal?

I've applied for an apartment and my landlord is asking for both an employment letter and recent bank statements as part of the rental application. This feels excessive to me. Has anyone experienced this before? Is this a normal request in today's rental market, or should I be concerned?
