Confused About Last Month's Rent Deposit Rules

I'm a first-time renter in Toronto and really anxious about the deposit process. I've heard that landlords can ask for last month's rent upfront, but I'm not sure how that works. What if I need my deposit back later? Are there any common practices for getting my money returned?
