Hidden fees with toronto moving companies anyone faced this nightmare

I just moved from a walkup in Little Italy and was shocked by the extra $200 in fees the movers added last minute. Fuel surcharges? Seriously? I wish I'd known. Anyone else dealt with surprise costs while moving in Toronto? How can I avoid this in the future?
