Renters insurance needed for moving into toronto apartment worth it?

I'm moving to a walkup in Little Italy next month and my landlord mentioned renters insurance is mandatory. Is it really necessary? How much should I expect to pay for coverage? Any tips on cheap movers in Toronto as well? I'm feeling overwhelmed with the costs.
