How to deal with movers damaging furniture who pays for it in toronto?

I'm moving from my Scarborough 1960s walk-up to a new place with my partner and just discovered our movers aren't liable for damaged items unless we pay for extra insurance. With on-time packing and a chaotic schedule, I'm overwhelmed. Have others faced this? How did you handle it?
