Moving from etobicoke townhouse to high-rise condo in winter tips

I’ve got a move lined up from my townhouse in Etobicoke to a high-rise condo downtown in January. Any advice on how to prep for the cold? Also, what should I expect cost-wise from movers? Last time a crew added fees day of, so I'm worried about surprises again.
