Is it normal for my landlord to ask for 3 months' rent as a deposit?

I'm being asked to pay three months' rent upfront as a security deposit. I thought it was usually just one month? Is this common practice, or should I be worried? It feels excessive, but I'm not sure if I’m overreacting. Is this even legal?
