Thinking about renting in Leslieville, any thoughts?

I've been eyeing Leslieville for a while now. I love the art scene, and those cute cafes along Queen Street are hard to resist. But I'm curious about the rental market there—do landlords usually ask for employment letters? Seems a bit much, right?
