Is it normal to feel uneasy about neighborhood safety?

I've been living in my building for a few months now, but I can’t shake off this feeling that the neighborhood is a bit sketchy at night. I've heard about bike thefts and a couple of break-ins around here. Is it typical for landlords to brush off these concerns, or should I be more proactive?
