How much do movers cost toronto for a small apartment move

I’m moving from a tiny walk-up in Scarborough to a slightly bigger place downtown, and I've gotten quotes ranging from $400 to over $1,000! How do I know if I'm being ripped off? My budget is tight, and I can’t have my stuff in storage for long if it doesn't fit.
