Can landlords ask for my SIN on rental applications?

I'm unsure what information landlords are legally allowed to request on rental applications. Can they ask for my Social Insurance Number (SIN)? Is this legal, or does it invade my privacy? Do I have to provide such personal information? What are my rights as a prospective tenant?
