What happens when my lease expires - do I have to move?

I'm really confused about what happens when my lease ends soon. If it expires, do I have to move, or does it automatically convert to month-to-month? My landlord is pressuring me to sign a new lease, but I'm unsure of my rights. What should I do? Can someone clarify this for me?
