Average 1BR rent hit $2400 - how can we afford this?

Just looked at the average rent for a 1BR apartment in Toronto, and it's hit an incredible $2400! As someone making $60k, that's 60% of my income just for rent. Is $2400 the new normal, or am I missing something?
