Why do movers charge so much for a tiny studio move in toronto

Just got a quote for moving my tiny studio from Markham to downtown Toronto, and they want $1,200! The initial quote was $600, but now they say it'll take double the time. Can anyone explain why the costs can skyrocket like this or recommend affordable movers that won’t pull surprises?
