Landlord wants 3 months deposit - is this even legal?

My landlord is asking for a deposit equal to 3 months' rent before I can move in. I've never rented before, so I’m not sure if this is standard. Is this normal, or should I be worried? I feel like it’s a big ask, but maybe I’m just being naive?
