Surprise charges from toronto movers for a 2 bedroom in leslieville

I just moved my 2-bedroom semi-detached in Leslieville and thought I got a steal with a low quote from movers. But by the end, I got hit with $300 extra for packing supplies and a fuel surcharge! Anyone else had this experience? How can I avoid surprise costs next time?
