Landlord wants a co-signer - what are their responsibilities?

I've been hit with the news that a guarantor is required for my rental application in Toronto. This is stressing me out because I’m on a tight budget and can’t find a co-signer! What are the responsibilities of a guarantor? Are there any affordable options if I can't secure one?
